Salomon Trail Series race – Studley Park is only 2 weeks away

It’s only a couple of weeks to go til the start of the Salomon Trail Run series for 2012.

With that in mind, and starting to build up my weekly long runs ahead of the Surfcoast Century later in the year, I headed out this weekend for a run with Megs and Annie (Members of Australia’s other least known Adventure Racing Team – Up There Bazzaley) for a run along the Yarra Trails.

It was miserable when we set out. Fine soaking rain complemented the low fog and freezing temperatures as we headed down, out of Abbotsford to the trails along the banks of the Yarra River.  It didn’t take us too long to warm up though and for the next 2 1/2 hours we ran along one of the hidden gems of inner city Melbourne.

I’ve lived in Melbourne for years and still I am surprised at how close we are to some spectacular wetlands. Even though it was cold and ‘damp’, it was also quieter and from the river banks, at times it was almost possible to believe we were miles away from the city sprawl.

We ran along various Yarra trails before eventually making the climb up the banks and back into the city. It was a fantastic day out and put us all in a really good mood for the day.

The topic of most of our conversation of course was the Surfcoast Century. My first Ultra. 100 km along some of the most spectacular coastline in Australia.

I think it is going to be so much easier to do the long runs off-road than on. This 2 1/2 hours passed a whole lot quicker than it would have had we chosen to run along a road, or even a bike path for that matter. Running in the bush is just so much more inspiring than on the road amongst even the lightest of traffic.

Speaking of inspiring. The list of names for the Surfcoast Century is growing every week. The race has attracted a lot of interest from those likely to be battling it out for line honours.  There are plenty of people who will be a little further down the order. Many of them will be having a go at their first Ultra – just like me.

The Salomon Trail Running Series is a great prelude for the Surfcoast Century too. And just like its big brother, has gained a lot of interest. I watched this video below just recently about a guy having a go at this series for the first time this year. If you need a little extra motivation to get out there over the coming weeks, take some inspiration from Scott.

Anyway, stay tuned, the first in the Salomon series is a little over two weeks away. Get out there and have fun. If you are considering doing any of the Salomon Trail runs here in Victoria this year, keep an eye out for me.
